What else needs to be said? Mt. Rushmore is probably one of the most iconic places in the United States of America. This has been a bucket list destination for so many people, including myself. While reading about the history for the monument, it was no surprise that the original builders were looking for something that would help drive tourism to this beautiful region.
Fun Fact: the original stone carver in charge of creating Mt. Rushmore is the same gentleman who built the stone carving at Stone Mountain just outside of Atlanta, GA.
The cost to see this treasure up close and personal is only $10. You can stay for as long or as little as you like. For as many visitors as Mt. Rushmore has flocking to it every day, it really is convenient to get in an out of the park. Upon arrival you receive a ticket. Then when you are ready to leave you pay your fee at a kiosk (there are several set up all around the parking garage, and gift shop). As you leaving the parking area, you scan your ticket at the gate and away you go. It is very easy, and both times we have visited there were no lines.
Anyway, one of the best moments at Mt. Rushmore is to walk along the Avenue of Flags as you approach the presidents carved on the mountain. It is an awe inspiring walk that makes you proud to be an American. I dont say that lightly either. Regardless of how you feel about this country, it is humbling to to walk through the avenue of state flags while staring at the mountain looming high above. There is a sense of connection and you can’t help but be swept up in the moment.
There are numerous trails you can take if you feel so inclined. Some will even take you right up to base of the mountain. However, this is one park that allows everyone, regardless of age and/or physical ability, to take in the full beauty of what was created.
There are so many wonderful places to visit in The Black Hills of Wyoming and South Dakota, but no trip is truly complete unless you head to Mt. Rushmore. It is the lynchpin for any trip out here. After Memorial Day each year the park lights up the mountain at night as well. It is such a beautiful spot you will want to see it during the day and at night.
OR even in the snow!
I will never forget my first visit to Mt Rushmore. It was snowing heavily and we didn’t think we would be able to visit the monument. Luckily we made it and I will never forget my first glimpse.
I remember feeling so many emotions- mostly because I had convinced myself over the years that I would never have the opportunity to visit South Dakota as it was too far north and just not something that I could see myself doing. I’m so grateful to have a spouse that doesn’t allow naysayers or self-doubt to stifle his dreams and desires. All I can say now is to follow your dreams and don’t entertain self-doubt! Lastly, if you are in South Dakota- don’t forget to make time to visit this iconic monument! ❤️
